Dear Professor Bolster,
I hope you are doing well. The reason I am writing to you today is that I wanted to introduce myself. That way, you can get to know me a little more and understand why I am pursuing a science career. First, I must tell you that my passion for science started when I was just a child. I was 12 years old, and I was in my biology class. At that time, I was living in MedellĂn, Colombia. A city full of nature and surrounded by mountains. My city is usually called “La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera,” the city of eternal spring. I think this wonderful city greatly influenced my life since I love to observe nature and living beings.
As I said before, it was in the biology class that I realized that science was something that I wanted. The professor was teaching about viruses and antibodies. I enjoyed learning about these topics so much that, to this day, I remember when I first learned them and the name of the teacher, David. That day, I discovered my love for science, especially that related to the human body. However, it was not until my junior year in high school that I decided to pursue a path that would lead me to become a physician. That is why I decided to study Biology. It is my first step towards my main goal. I have always known that this is a long and challenging journey. However, I have also felt that God put me in the world to continue with this vocation, or one related to science. I know this may change in the future, but for now, I do not see myself doing something different.
In my senior year in high school, I had the opportunity to participate in a program called Her Honor Mentoring. This program encourages and empowers young women to help them gain work experiences to achieve more knowledge and be ready for future jobs. During my time in this program, I visited a company called Bionic Solutions, located in Manhattan. This company aims to use technology as a method of innovation to improve the performance of other companies or associated entrepreneurs and provide practical solutions to their problems. This visit was an excellent experience in which I learned many things, such as using technology appropriately, thinking, having innovative ideas, and creating tools that are productive and necessary in society. Although this experience itself is not related to the type of science I want to focus on, it was enriching. It was a great opportunity.
One of the main goals for me during this semester is not only to received good grades but to learn a lot. I am sometimes too focused on having good grades that I forget the primary purpose of education. That is, to acquire knowledge. I would also like to be able to be more organized and to use my time appropriately. I have an issue, and that is that I procrastinate unmeasurably. I want to change this to spare my time correctly, thus having a more enriching process of learning.
As for my future, I think that although life is very uncertain. I would like to continue my career in Biology and graduate. I would like to learn what I need to present my Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and thus continue with the path that I need to achieve my goal of being a physician.
The path I have decided to take scares me a lot because it is very uncertain. However, I am pleased because I am already taking my first steps to achieving it. Professor Bolster, I hope this brief introduction has helped you get to know me a little more, to understand my roots and love for science and why I am studying this career. Thank you very much for your interest, for allowing me to have this means to express myself and for your attention. I hope you have a great day and that we can get to know each other more as time goes on. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Sara M. Tamayo
